Two Fort Mill police officers caught a sex-crime suspect who also allegedly had illegal drugs on him at the S.C. Strawberry Festival over the weekend, according to a police report.

The officers were patrolling the festival around 4:15 p.m. Saturday and recognized the suspect, identified as Dalton Ray Wright, in the crowd, the report states. The officers – identified in a report as Officers Kelly and Eaches – remembered that the Fort Mill resident allegedly had an active warrant for criminal sexual conduct with a minor from Lancaster County and detained him.

“While speaking with Wright, Officer Eaches could smell an odor of marijuana coming from Wright’s cheetah print book bag,” the FMPD report says. “Wright stated that he had THC vials in the book bag and possibly some marijuana in his pocket.”

Wright, 20, of the 1600 block of Old Nation Ford Road, was cited by Fort Mill police with simple possession of marijuana. Officers later drove him to Lancaster County and turned him over to a sheriff’s deputy there to face the sex charge.

Authorities say Wright allegedly had sex with a 15-year-old girl earlier this year in Lancaster County, leading to the charge. He has a long list of felony drug charges from 2018 that are pending with the York County Sheriff’s Office, according to online court records.
